Ready for a day trip? Do you want to wander along the beach to rock hunt, see beautiful fields suitable for kite flying, and explore a historical fort that was constructed in the 1800's? Take the beautiful scenic drive from Anacortes down to Whidbey Island just south of Coupeville and visit Fort Casey Historical State Park!
Upon entrance into the park, we were greeted by a doe and her fawn and the wide open fields and picnic tables were a beautiful site for our picnic lunch. With spacious green space for lots of social distancing fun, kids were able to run around and enjoy the beautiful day while we watched in awe at the synchronized kite team putting on a show!
Now it was time to explore the fort! Built over 100 years ago, Fort Casey was equipped for defense and until the mid 1940's was used as a training facility. The massive (and rare) disappearing gun, which was the height of technology in the early 1900's, is on display at Fort Casey. Further improvements in war efforts such as airplanes and warships rendered these guns obsolete. While you can explore the fort at your leisure, make sure to keep an eye out for your littles as there are some dangerous spots and ledges.
Instead of seeing the vintage lighthouse, which looked beautiful from afar but was closed for renovations, we took the path down to the sprawling beach. Hours of fun could be had along the shoreline; collecting rocks, making forts with the driftwood or observing the wildlife (we spotted an eagle snacking on a fish!).
