Langley, Washington, affectionately known as the "Village by the Sea," is a picturesque town nestled on the southern tip of Whidbey Island. Overlooking the serene Saratoga Passage with views of the Cascade Mountains, Langley offers a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a vibrant arts scene.

🏞️ A Glimpse into Langley's Past

Long before European settlers arrived, the Snohomish people inhabited the area now known as Langley. The site was a seasonal camping ground during clam harvesting months, and nearby Sandy Point was home to a village with a large potlatch house, serving as a cultural hub for the Snohomish band. However, by the late 1800s, following the removal of the Snohomish people to the Tulalip Reservation, the village was abandoned. Modern settlement began in the 1890s, and Langley was officially incorporated on February 26, 1913.

🏛️ Community and Education

Langley is served by the South Whidbey School District #206, which includes Langley, Clinton, and most of Freeland. The district is headquartered in Langley and comprises several schools, including South Whidbey High School, South Whidbey Middle School, and South Whidbey Elementary School.

The town also boasts a rich community spirit, with various local organizations and events that bring residents together throughout the year.

🌊 Natural Beauty and Recreation

Langley offers a plethora of outdoor activities. The town's location provides stunning views of Mount Baker and the Cascade Mountains. Residents and visitors can enjoy over 1,000 acres of wooded trails, ideal for hiking and wildlife observation. The nearby Saratoga Passage is perfect for kayaking, and the area is known for sightings of bald eagles, blue herons, and migrating whales.

🏘️ A Close-Knit Community

Despite its small size, Langley has a strong sense of community. The town's population was 1,035 at the 2010 census, with a slight increase to 1,147 by the 2020 census. The local government operates under a mayor-council system, with Tim Callison serving as the current mayor.

📚 A Nod to History

Langley's commitment to preserving its history is evident in the South Whidbey Historical Society Museum, housed in a building constructed in 1902 by Jacob Anthes, the town's founder. The museum offers insights into the area's logging history and the development of the town.
