HISTORY

Bellingham's roots trace back to Indigenous peoples, particularly the Lummi Nation, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, establishing four separate towns—Whatcom, Sehome, Bellingham, and Fairhaven—which eventually merged to form present-day Bellingham in 1903. The city thrived on industries like coal mining, logging, and shipping, and later became known for its progressive culture and educational influence, largely due to Western Washington University. Historic buildings and preserved districts throughout the city reflect its diverse past.
