HISTORY

Coupeville is one of the oldest towns in Washington State, with a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s. Originally inhabited by the Lower Skagit people of the Coast Salish tribes, the area was later settled by Europeans, most notably Captain Thomas Coupe, for whom the town is named. Founded in 1852, Coupeville became a key center for agriculture and maritime trade in the Puget Sound region. Much of its historic charm remains today, with many original 19th-century buildings preserved within the Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, the first such reserve in the United States.

INFORMATION & LOCATION

Coupeville is located on central Whidbey Island in Island County, Washington. It sits on the shores of Penn Cove, known for its world-famous mussels, and is approximately two hours from Seattle, including a scenic ferry ride or a drive over Deception Pass Bridge. The town has a population of around 2,000 and serves as the county seat. Coupeville’s setting within Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve gives it a unique mix of pastoral landscapes, waterfront beauty, and deep historical context—all carefully protected and celebrated.

Coupeville hosts a variety of beloved annual events that reflect its heritage and coastal character. The Penn Cove MusselFest, held each March, is a favorite, featuring mussel tastings, cooking demos, and waterfront fun. The town also celebrates the holidays with charming events like the Greening of Coupeville, a festive tree lighting and parade that brings out the entire community.
