HISTORY
Semiahmoo’s name comes from the Coast Salish word meaning “half-moon,” a reference to the crescent-shaped spit of land where the community is located. For thousands of years, it was home to the Semiahmoo First Nation, who relied on the area's rich marine resources. In the late 1800s, European settlers established a cannery and developed the area into a thriving center for salmon processing. At one time, the Alaska Packers Association Cannery was one of the largest in the world. Though the cannery operations ceased in the mid-20th century, the site has since been preserved as a historical landmark and transformed into a scenic, residential, and resort destination.
