A Weekend Away in Anacortes, Washington

Just 70 miles north of Seattle, Washington lies Anacortes, Washington; a true PNW gem if you're looking for a weekend away or even a new place to call home. Anacortes is located on Fidalgo Island in the San Juan Island chain and is frequently referred to in travel literature as the Gateway to the San Juans. Fidalgo Island is the only island in the San Juans that you can drive onto and is connected to the mainland by a bridge just outside of town - making for a dreamy yet accessible getaway.

When you arrive into town you are greeted with the quaint charm of commercial ave; this is the main hub for local businesses in town. Spanning about 2 miles this strip offers all the essentials whether its a mind-blowing muffin from The Store Grocery, or an incredible local dining experience sure to guarantee your return at Adrift Restaurant in downtown Anacortes.

Now that we've covered food, on to some local favorites spots to spend your afternoon. The City of Anacortes manages and maintains over 65 miles of trails throughout the island as well as the 3,176 acres dedicated to forestlands and parks. Whether you're a seasoned hiking pro or a novice looking for an afternoon adventure - there's a trail for everyone. A local favorite is Sares Head, located on the south end of the island.

The trails are easily navigated, and vary in difficulty; upper trail if hills don't scare you or the lower trail for a more gradual incline. Now don't be scared... the trek up to the top may seem long but its only about 20 minutes to the top where you're met with sweeping views of the western side of Fidalgo Island to the right and the coastal view of Western Whidbey Island on the left. All in all this trial is stunning, well maintained, and a great spot for an afternoon picnic or hanging out and watching the jets fly ahead from the Whidbey Island Naval Base.

If hiking isn't your jam that's totally fine, the Tommy Thompson Trail might be for you. This paved walking path spans over 5 miles long and is the perfect opportunity to see everything in Anacortes from downtown to the shipyards and views of the refineries across the channel. The path even has a brief mile stretch over the channel (you walk over the water), but be sure to bring a light jacket as the breeze tends to pickup over the water as the sun goes down.

Aside from the natural wonders that Anacortes has, there are plenty of guided tours that can help fill your days with memories. Anacortes Kayak Tours offers 1.5 hour, 3 hour, or day trips kayaking through the San Juan Islands coasts or go whale watching with Island Adventures on their private tours. There truly is something for everyone tucked away in the San Juan Island.
