HISTORY
Anacortes has a rich maritime heritage rooted in the late 1800s, when it was established as a port town and became a hub for fishing, shipbuilding, and lumber. Originally inhabited by the Samish people, the city was later named after Anna Curtis, the wife of early settler Amos Bowman. With dreams of becoming a major railroad terminus, the city grew rapidly but settled into a quieter, yet industrious, role as a center for marine trade and industry. Today, remnants of its history can still be seen in its preserved architecture, museums, and working waterfront
