HISTORY

Oak Harbor’s history dates back to the mid-1800s when European settlers arrived and established farms and maritime businesses along the shores of Whidbey Island. Named for the Garry oak trees that once lined its shores, the city grew steadily, especially after becoming the home of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) in 1942. The presence of the military base transformed Oak Harbor into a vibrant, diverse community and remains a major influence on its culture, economy, and population today. Despite its growth, the city has maintained strong ties to its Dutch and Irish roots, which are reflected in local architecture, festivals, and traditions.
